Aerial View of Pučišća

In Particular Pučišća

In the next few blogs, I want to share something about the places in Croatia where a large part of the Perilous Times Saga is set. But before I get started, I suggest that you copy some Croatian names, such as the one in the title above, and paste them into Google Translate (or the equivalent) to hear what they sound like. Often it's nothing like the sound you've been hearing in your head.

Brač, for example, has a "ch" sound at the end. And the "Bra" sounds like a sheep's Baa, with an R thrown in for good measure.

Pučišća, sounds something like, "Poo Teesht Cha," at least to my half-plugged up, undiscriminating English ears .

If you examine any photo of this enchanting town, you will see that I have not done it justice in describing its beauty. And what setting better than this to place the shop of the mysterious Stjepan Marić? Whose name sounds something like "Styepan Marich." My apologies to any native Croatian reading this.

Readers might be interested to learn that Croatia was recently voted the best place for tourists to visit in Europe in 2025. A word of warning: during the height of tourist season in summer, cities like Split will be fairly heaving with tourists. Brač, however, should be quieter. If you find your way there, do pick up some stoneware. A bowl very much like the one Suzy purchased now sits on a buffet in our entryway. Like Suzy, once I'd seen it, I simply had to have it. If you are trying to find Stjepan Marić's bookstore, however, you will look in vain.

My next post will speak of Diocletian's Palace in Split.
